ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
The Programme is a successor to the “Theatre Critical Studies” programme, which was founded in 1950. The Programme is the only one in the country that prepares highly qualified specialists in the field of theatre history and theory, theatre critic and theatre management; specialists who are well informed and have skills and competences in the field of journalism, culture and other arts. The educational process assists the development of practical skills for theoretical aspects and theatre studies, for critical writing in a wide spectrum of specialized and journalistic genres in the print and digital media; for managerial, expert and coordination work in the subsidized theatres, independent companies, projects, festivals and other organisations.
The educational process emphasizes on fundamental subject matters: history and theory of the Bulgarian, European and world theatre; theory of drama; stage performance and spectator’s perception; main principles of theatre management; marketing and cultural policies in the performing arts. During their studies, students develop basic skills for analysis of dramaturgical texts, theatre plays, theatre processes, theatre organizations and the cultural market.
FORM OF EDUCATION
The Programme duration is 4 years (8 semesters) full-time studies. Students graduate by defending of a Bachelor thesis in the field of stage practice, dramaturgy, or theatre management (not shorter than 50 pages)
QUALIFICATION AND PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates acquire educational qualification degree “Bachelor of Arts”, with professional qualification “Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Critical Studies” or “Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Management”. They have the opportunity to work as dramaturgs; consultants of theatre organisations, companies and media; theatre critics and journalists in the print and digital media; managers and coordinators of projects in the field of performing arts and culture; experts in the field of theatre production, marketing and distribution; employees in state and municipal cultural administrations. The graduates could also continue further their education in Master programmes.
ADMISSION EXAM
Stage 1 (anonymous, written)
Essay on a topic, chosen by the Selection Committee, related to the candidate’s ideas and understanding of theatre. Duration: 4 hours.
Stage 2
Interview with the candidates on their theatre and overall cultural knowledge and mindset. The candidates comment on a theatre play, suggested by the Selection Committee.
